What should we make of Manchester United’s late signing?

Plymouth v Carlisle 181014After last summer’s banner transfer activity, this January was always going to be a little disappointing for Manchester United fans. After all, their club had already splurged their cash. The Red Devils don’t have an infinite reserve of cash that they can draw upon (although it sometimes feels like they do).

As a result, Manchester United have gone from spending big on players like Angel Di Maria (£59.7m!) and attracting top talent like Radamel Falcao, to snapping up freebies with dubious injury histories (Victor Valdes, of course) and relatively unheard of footballers like Bolton star Andy Kellett (on loan).

For some, that last signing has hit them like a kick in the teeth. Manchester United fans have been complaining about how they lack quality defensive options for some time now. Louis Van Gaal could have responded by signing a player like Mats Hummels or Marquinhos. Instead, he’s signed a player who has made only four first team appearances for Bolton.

To sign him, The Red Devils had to fight off clubs like Plymouth Argyle. That’s a mark of the kind of player this is.

To say that this was a underwhelming deal would be an understatement. Still, that’s not to say that things won’t work out for the best.

After all, Louis Van Gaal is a smart cookie. He wouldn’t add players to his squad without good purpose (even if they’re just at Old Trafford as part of a loan deal). I don’t view Kellett as a long-term solution, but there aren’t that many long-term solutions available in the January transfer window. Instead, Kellett will help to fill a gap whilst Van Gaal and co. prepare for a bigger acquisition in the summer.

In other words, it’s a stop-gap move that should have plenty of utility over the coming months. If he doesn’t catch the eye, Manchester United will move on. If he does, The Red Devils will keep him. It’s a win-win situation for the club.

Besides, signing somebody is better than signing nobody, right?

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Andy Kellett?

I did not read the whole piece, the bits I glimpse through shows the writer has the club at heart but regarding Andy Kellet, yes we as fans wanted a top class signing at the very least, he might not be the sort of player we need at this very moment but how certain are you that the club did not try to bring those sort of players to the club. Negotiations are not smooth sailing no more. Some of us are not privy to dealings within the club. Let us hope the summer will bring smiles to all our faces.
