Should Arsenal be disappointed to have missed out on Sami Khedira?

Sami KhediraFor the best part of a year now, The Gunners have been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s well regarded defensive midfielder, Sami Khedira.

The German maestro has always struck me as a good fit for this Arsenal side. He’s hugely disciplined, works really hard, wins a lot of tackles and breaks up a lot of opposition play. As a footballer he just about seems to be hitting his prime. Now would be the perfect time for somebody to snap him up.

With concerns over the long-term potential of players like Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini, it’s not that surprising that Arsene Wenger continues to pick up links to Sami Khedira, especially when you consider the man’s contractual situation. His Real Madrid contract will expire in the summer when he’ll be available as a free transfer.

If he moves on for nothing in a few months time, he’ll be one of the deals of the decade. This is a fully-fledged international footballer at the top of his game. If he moved on for £15m, he’d be a bargain. Signing him for nothing would be a sensational piece of business.

Unfortunately for Arsene Wenger and co. it doesn’t look like their going to get their man. Indeed, The Metro recently published an article that claimed that Sami Khedira is now Bayern Munich bound. It really wouldn’t surprise me if this particular German talent fancied a shot in the Bundesliga’s best team. He’s probably got a better shot of winning silverware there too.

Luckily, it’s not all doom an gloom for The Gunners. After all, Francis Coquelin finally seems to be coming good. He’s put in three or four good performances in a row now and he looks ready for the big time. He’s already managed to leap-frog Mathieu Flamini in the pecking order. Mikel Arteta could be next.

With that in mind, I’m able to control my disappointment over missing out on Sami Khedira. The future belongs to Francis.

What’s your take? Would you have liked to see Sami Khedira in an Arsenal shirt?
