Last summer Brendan Rodgers tried to fix his defense by signing players like Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno. I think it’s fair to say that this dynamic duo hasn’t had the effect that the Liverpool boss would have hoped for.
The Spaniard, in particular, seems to have struggled to settle in. He made a couple of big blunders early in his Liverpool career and now his reputation proceeds him. He’s quick and he’s technically gifted, so I’m sure he’ll improve, but at the moment I would argue that The Reds can do better.
Still, it’s Dejan Lovren who’s the big disappointment. After impressing at Southampton, the big centre-forward has looked a little lacklustre at Anfield. Again, he’s capable of the occasional good performance, but he’s way too inconsistent.
As such, there’s a good chance that Brendan Rodgers will look to bring in fresh defensive recruits this January. This leads me neatly onto a story that was recently published by The Metro. The source suggests that Liverpool are entertaining a bizarre swap deal between their aging midfielder, Lucas Leiva and Inter Milan’s aging centre-back, Nemanja Vidic.
The deal would be all the more bizarre, given the player’s history with Manchester United. The man is practically a United legend, after all. It would be weird to see him in a Liverpool shirt.
But ‘weird’ doesn’t necessarily mean bad. Don’t forget, Vidic is 33-years-old, he’s not exactly going senile. He could still make a major impact at a Premier League club, if there’s one that’s prepared to back him.
He’s got prior experience in English football, he’s a man mountain and he doesn’t back out of challenges. A centre-back partnership between Nemanja Vidic and Martin Skrtel wouldn’t be particularly fast, but it would be hard to crack.
This deal wouldn’t break the bank, but it could prove to be successful (in the short-term at least). With that in mind, maybe it’s worth considering?
