Manchester United fans have been waiting for their club to do something about their lacklustre defense for quite some now. After all, it’s not like Louis Van Gaal tackled the full extent of this problem during the summer transfer window.
The Dutchman spent big on attacking players, but failed to properly bolster his defense. Let’s hope he doesn’t make the same mistake this January.
Luckily, it looks like he’s already making some major inroads. According to The Metro, they’ve ‘lodged a bumper transfer offer’ for Borussia Dortmund’s star centre-back, Mats Hummels. The source notes that they’re unaware of the extent of Manchester United’s bid, whilst also claiming that The Red Devils would need to offer at least £30m to drag any potential deal across the line.
£30m is a lot of money, but Mats Hummels is the real deal. The big German defender has accrued 38 caps for his international side, whilst in turn making 240 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. He’s pretty much a club-legend already.
Still, Dortmund are going through an extended rough-patch of form. Hummels may feel that the time is right for him to move on. He may well fancy a new challenge in the Premier League.
Physically speaking, he’d be a good fit for English football. He’s 6 foot 3 inches tall, he’s broad-shouldered and he doesn’t duck out of any challenges. He’s not the quickest fellow, but he makes up for this with his positional awareness and his desire to win every ball.
Manchester United could well have found their next Rio Ferdinand here. If only Van Gaal had moved in for him last summer!
Still, that’s in the past now. Louis Van Gaal has the chance to atone for his errors this January. Let’s just hope that the club are willing to back him by matching Dortmund’s £30m asking price. If they do, then we’re likely to see a much improved Manchester United side over the second half of the season.
