Jackson MartinezSince moving to Arsenal, Danny Welbeck has failed to overcome his critic’s claims that he’s not a natural goal-scorer. In 20 games, he’s found the back of the net 7 times, which isn’t a bad return, but it’s not a great one either. As a centre-forward for Arsenal, you’re presented with so many opportunities to score that you should at least grab one every two games.

I can’t say that I’m fully convinced by the ex-Manchester United star. He’s a good back-up option, but I don’t think that he or Olivier Giroud should be a first team option for The Gunners.

That’s why I was excited to see The Express claim that Arsene Wenger is still interested in signing FC Porto star Jackson Martinez. The Colombian centre-forward is one of the best finishers in Europe.

In 113 appearances for his current club, he’s scored 78 goals. This season alone, he’s scored 18 goals in just 22 appearances. That’s a remarkable return. At 28-years-old, he seems to have struck upon the form of his career. Is it any wonder that clubs like Arsenal are interested?

Unfortunately for Arsene Wenger, he’s not the only interested party. The aforementioned source claims that ‘Roma are favourites to secure Martinez’s signature’. The Serie A side view the Colombian centre-forward as the ideal replacement for the aging Francesco Totti.

Still, if the player is faced with a choice between Arsenal and Roma, you’d have to think that he would favour a move to the Premier League. Arsenal should provide Martinez with a better opportunity to earn silverware, as well as the chance to play alongside top class talent like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

That has to provide some draw for Jackson Martinez. What’s more, Arsenal should be able to overcome Roma in any financial battle that may brew in the transfer market. If The Gunners want this player enough, it should be well within their power to snap him up.

What’s your take? Is this £27.5m star a good solution for Arsenal?
