Could Arsenal REALLY be in the market for Ryan Shawcross?

ShawcrossEvery time The Gunners play Stoke City, it ends up being an event of some kind. Their last away game against The Potters resulted in a 3-2 defeat for Arsenal (Arsene Wenger’s side even managed to concede within the first 30 seconds. Whilst they were better in the second half, it’s fair to say that The Gunners just weren’t up to snuff.

Luckily they were in better form last week, when they took on Stoke City at The Emirates. The Gunners stormed to a 3-0 victory as their competition failed to drum up too much impetus.

The game was notable for a few rash tackles (Nacho Monreal took an elbow to the face and Mathieu Debuchy was shoved into the sideboards, dislocating his shoulder). All in all, it was a game that will have done little to improve Stoke’s reputation.

Which brings me to The Express‘s claim that ‘Emirates enemy’, Ryan Shawcross could be a target for The Gunners as they try to sort out their leaky defense. If this deal were to go ahead, it would blossom into a major story.

It’s fair to say that most Arsenal fans hate Ryan Shawcross. He’s the man whose tackle almost ended Aaron Ramsey’s career. The Welshman has come back as strong as ever, but there was a large period of time when it looked like he’d never re-find form. It was a senseless act from a man who should have known better.

Is he the kind of man that Arsene Wenger wants at The Emirates?

The aforementioned source claims that The Professor is looking to add some English grit to his squad, citing his admiration of John Terry: ‘You do not find many like Terry any more. You had more before than you do today. When I arrived here we had a great defence. The back four were all English, who communicated because they had the same culture, the same way to see the game.’

Interesting stuff, but I hope that this outlook does not turn into a move for Ryan Shawcross. Wouldn’t such an event be the ultimate act of disrespect towards Aaron Ramsey? Pissing off one of the best midfielders in the world doesn’t seem like a good idea to me.

Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger has somebody else in mind.

What’s your take? Can you picture Ryan Shawcross in an Arsenal shirt?

  • Barca says:

Not sure Arsenal could afford him. Also fairly arrogant to suggest that Ramsey is even close to being one of the worlds best midfielders.

    Poor article overall.

    No.

I take it with mixed feelings. In football, players shake hands with smiles after the game while fans, in and out of the stadium, kill themselves. I remember correctly that incident. To my judgment, Shawcross did not mean the slightest harm. He was shocked at the outcome of the tackle and wept. After the game, reports said he sent messages of regrets and apology to Ramsey. What else can he do to what has already happened. However, I was shocked to read comments from Shawcross before the last game that all of them in Stoke City hate Arsenal with a passion. Does it explain a lack of remorse from Stoke City attacker when Debuchy was inflicted a shoulder injury during the last game and the seeming rugby game they play each time they meet Arsenal? I quite understand how Ramsey will feel if Shawcross wears Arsenal colors with him. All in all, we must move on. Maybe Shawcross to Arsenal could restore normalcy.

I actually think he would be a very good signing, fancy players hate playing against him for a reason. Our Tone could have easily broken some bones in his time and Shawcross has that aggression. I do despise him for the challenges he makes with no intentions of gaining the ball… however i think he would act more fairly/classy playing for the Arsenal.

    Players for arsenal

  • Ako stoke says:

Shawcross wouldn’t want to go there and Ramsey is not one of the best midfielders by a long way lol.

  • Wagga says:

arsenal avnt gt a defender no where near as good as shawcross .

Again another biased report that will not let the players and fans move on.
Ryan Shawcross is an honest player who was truly sorry for the tackle. Let’s not forget it was Stoke players that went to Ramseys aid while the Arsenal players only wanted Shawcross to be sent off.
Ryan would benefit by a move to a top four club as he is being overlooked for international duty by playing for Stoke City.
To be honest Arsenal need to man up, football is still a contact sport. This has always been the issue between our clubs- Arsenal moan if we don’t back off and let them play fast free flowing football, calling Stoke a rugby team.
I must admit though, I do think Stoke needs to thank Arsenal because all this name calling has brought the fans and players together and stronger ensuring our Premier League survival.
    Jon Stoke and proud.
