Mats Hummels (Germany)At the time of writing, Borussia Dortmund are currently joint-bottom in the Bundesliga table. For a team that’s well accustomed to competing for silverware, this season has proven to be a massive disappointment.

To put things in perspective, Dortmund’s struggles this season are the equivalent of Arsenal getting embroiled in a relegation battle. How can a team that’s used to competing at the top of the table adjust to life at the bottom? It’s hard to understand.

Naturally enough, this has led to speculation regarding some of Dortmund’s best players. Will stars like Marco Reus and Mats Hummels want to hang around much longer?

With clubs like Arsenal on the hunt for defensive talent, Dortmund’s classy centre-back could be just the ticket. As luck would have it, Hummels does seem to be pretty peeved by his club’s current situation. Check out these comments:

“We’ve managed pretty well at home in recent weeks, but not at all away. It’s pretty astonishing that we are so pathetic.”

Comments like this have led The Express to claim that Mats Hummels is ‘frustrated’ with his current role at Borussia Dortmund. They even suggest that the big German may be willing to agitate for a move.

For a player who has always seemed to be remarkably loyal to Borussia Dortmund, this strikes me as a rather drastic step. Still, if it gives Arsenal an advantage this January, then it’s a good thing.

The aforementioned source suggests that Mats Hummels is currently valued at around £47m. That’s a huge amount of money. Arsene Wenger would do well to use Borussia Dortmund’s current situation as a means for bringing the player’s value down. After all, Jurgen Klopp will know that he will be forced to sell Hummels on the cheap if his side gets relegated.

However you try to twist things, this looks like a good situation for The Gunnes to be in. If they can bring a world-class talent like Mats Hummels to the Emirates this January, who knows what they can achieve in the second half of the season.

What’s your take? Is Mats Hummels the right man for The Gunners? How much is he worth?
