Cavani 1Arsenal’s defense has been the subject of a lot of criticism following their performance against Southampton (a hapless 2-0 defeat), but their attack wasn’t overly impressive either. On a lot of occasions this season The Gunners have been too reliant on their Chilean superstar, Alexis Sanchez.

Without Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck (who were suspended and injured respectively), Arsenal lacked height and power and weren’t able to put enough men in the box to capitalise from their free-flowing attacks. In truth, it was a thoroughly disappointing display all round.

Fixing the defense should be Arsene Wenger’s main priority, but I also wouldn’t be too surprised to see the Frenchman sign an attacker during the January transfer window. He likes to confound and confuse pundits after all.

It shouldn’t be all that difficult to improve on his current options. Take, for instance, Edinson Cavani, the world-class Uruguayan striker who has been linked to Arsenal on a number of occasions on the run-up to the January transfer window. Could Arsene Wenger finally be ready to take the plunge?

Cavani was recently left out of Paris Saint Germain’s training camp in Marrakech, which led some to believe that an out-going transfer was on the way. The Express recently published an article that claims PSG are now ready and willing to let him leave the club. The source suggests that a ‘Premier League switch’ could be on the cards. Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are thought to be interested.

Unfortunately for Arsenal (and their competition), Edinson Cavani has been saddled with a huge price-tag. The Uruguayan could end up costing The Gunners £62m and that’s before you consider his extortionate wage demands. Arsene Wenger may well balk at these figures.

Still, there’s just no telling how much of an impact Edinson Cavani could have at a club like Arsenal. He’s one of the best strikers in the world and his goal-scoring record is nothing short of incredible. He’d be a marked improvement over the likes of Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck and an excellent shooting partner for Alexis Sanchez.

If Arsenal can afford to make this happen then I hope that they do.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners really be in the market for this big money striker? Do they have other priorities?
