Are Arsenal finally about to get their hands on this £4m defender?

|

Winston ReidFor the last two or three months now, The Gunners have been linked to West Ham’s star defender, Winston Reid. The New Zealand international has been a big part of The Hammers’ success this year.

His tough, diligent performances at the back have kept his team steady, even when opposition teams have been piling the pressure on. He’s renowned for his strength in the air and his good decision making processes both on and off the ball.

Arsenal fans may well remember him giving a penalty away when the two sides last faced each other (Santi Cazorla nicked the ball in front of him and couldn’t get out of the way of Reid’s out-stretched leg. A harsh penalty, but a penalty nonetheless), but those who have been watching him all season long will be well aware that he’s the real deal.

Most are also aware of Reid’s contractual situation. His current deal with West Ham will expire this summer when he’ll be available as a free transfer. This has led some to suggest that a cut-price January move could be on the cards.

Yet up until now, Sam Allardyce has been immovable. He clearly doesn’t want to let go of the New Zealand ace whilst The Hammers are still in with a chance of earning European football next year.

Still, as The Mirror note, things do seem to be developing. They suggest that the 26-year-old has made it ‘clear’ that he wants to join Arsenal. They also claim that he was ‘dropped’ for West Ham’s 3-0 victory over Hull City. If that’s truly the case, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in an Arsenal shirt before the January transfer window slams shut.

This could all be tabloid nonsense, but it’s hard to believe that Winston Reid wouldn’t have had his head turned by all the interest in his signature. The aforementioned source claims that a £4m deal could be on the cards. At this stage, a move of this value looks like the best step forward for each and every party.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal close a January deal for Winston Reid?
