Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juvenuts-)Manchester United’s winning run has been brought to a halt, thanks to a troublesome 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. Paul Lambert’s side haven’t exactly been flying high this season, so it’s a little disappointing to see The Red Devils struggle to break them down and fail to get the result they need.

I’d also argue that Louis Van Gaal’s defense should have done more to close down Christian Benteke and stop him from taking a shot. Unfortunately, these kind of criticisms have been leveled at United’s defense all season long.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Van Gaal has set his sights on signing Juventus’s star full-back, Stephan Lichtsteiner. Perhaps he can help The Red Devils to tighten things up at the back?

There have been various reports suggesting that the Swiss ace is looking to agree new terms with his current employee. This would have made it very difficult for Van Gaal to close the deal. Fortunately enough, the aforementioned source suggests that negotiations are still ongoing and that the door is still open for Manchester United to swoop in and snap him up.

It’s also thought that he could cost as much as £20m, which is a huge amount of money to spend on a 30-year-old. Still, he does have plenty of experience. He’s made over 100 appearances in Ligue 1 and more than 200 in Serie A. He’s also got 70 caps for the Switzerland international side. He’s been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

I’d argue that he’s still got two-or-three years left at the top of his game. I’m not sure that this makes him worthy of his £20m price-tag, but he’s certainly worthy considering. It’s not like there are a wealth of talented defenders out there. If Manchester United think they’ve found one, they’re right to try and snap him up.

What’s your take? Who should Manchester United look at during the January transfer window? Would Stephan Lichsteiner be a good option, or should they be chasing younger talent?
