Edinson CavaniManchester United’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa strikes me as a major set-back for the club. After scrapping their way through a series of victories, they’d clambered up the Premier League table and started to look like genuine contenders for a top four slot. Let’s hope that it doesn’t dent their stride.

Whilst it was nice to see Radamel Falcao grab a goal at the weekend, it’s still not entirely clear that he’s a long term solution. What with his injury record and the fact that he’s only scored 2 goals in 9 appearances, I think there’s plenty of reason to question whether his loan deal is worth extending.

But if Louis Van Gaal opts against offering Falcao a long-term contract, who will he look at instead? Well, there is one fairly obvious answer.

According to The Metro, Manchester United are readying a £50m bid for PSG’s star striker, Edinson Cavani. He’s one of the few players in world football whose goal-scoring record (particularly whilst he was at Napoli), rivals Falcao’s. In that regard, he’s certainly worth looking at, despite his colossal price-tag.

Since moving to PSG, Cavani has managed to score 38 goals in 65 games. That’s a fairly healthy return, especially considering that he doesn’t always play down the flanks for Laurent Blanc’s side. He’s very much in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shadow in Paris and there has been speculation regarding the player’s general happiness with his current role.

This could leave the door open for a club like Manchester United to swoop in and snap him up. In fact, the aforementioned source suggests that Louis Van Gaal is ‘desperate to do a deal’. That’s pretty strong language, don’t you think?

Even if signing Edinson Cavani necessitates sending Radamel Falcao back to Monaco, this still looks like a smart piece of business for The Red Devils. Cavani is one of the best in the world and with Manchester United close to re-finding their form, he could be the man to tip them back over the edge.

That strikes me as a £50m gamble that’s worth taking.

What’s your take? Is Edinson Cavani really the right answer for Manchester United?
