Arsenal can’t help but do things the hard way can they? Of course Arsene Wenger would take his club into this season with a serious lack of defenders. Starting the year with a well balanced squad would have been way too easy, wouldn’t it? The Professor is a sucker for a challenge.
Luckily, the January transfer window is right around the corner. Let’s hope that this will present him with a challenge of another kind: hunting down a brand new centre-back.
The Gunners’ back-four is the weakest part of their squad. It’s going to be interesting to see how Arsene Wenger reacts in the transfer market.
According to The Express, Arsenal have already found the perfect man for the job. The source suggests that The Gunners are ready to beat the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United to the punch, by signing Celtic’s well regarded centre-back, Virgil van Dijk.
That long list of clubs is evidence of how few top class defenders there are in the Premier League at the moment. Everybody’s on the look for new options.
As it happens, the source also carries quotes from Van Dijk, who seems to be keen to butter Arsenal up:
“Arsenal is an amazing club, of course. It’s a big club with a great history as well.”
When The Press asked him whether he’d like to play in England, or in the Champions League, he responded as follows: “I have ambitions, of course, like every player.”
It strikes me that Van Dijk is there for the taking. If Arsene Wenger is keen on the Dutchman, he won’t have to do to much convincing. Of course, he will need to put up enough cash to tempt his current paymasters into selling.
The Express claim that £10m could be enough to seal the deal. In the current footballing landscape, that’s pocket-change. Arsenal need Virgil van Dijk, so let’s hope that Arsene Wenger is ready and willing to do business.
