James MilnerIt’s often been a matter of great confusion as to why James Milner still gets game time in a Manchester City team that’s full to bursting of talent. It’s not like Manuel Pellegrini is lacking options in his midfield. What’s more, it’s not like he can’t afford to reach out into the transfer market and snap up a potential replacement.

As such, we can only deduce that he gets into Manchester City by virtue of his own ability. Over the last three full seasons at The Etihad, Milner has made 115 appearances for his club. He’s also got 53 caps for the England international side (admittedly, there’s a little less competition here).

That’s not bad for a 28-year-old. In fact, there’s an argument to suggest that James Milner is somewhat underrated. If so many top Premier League managers have backed him, then maybe we should too.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool could be interested in signing James Milner next summer. That adds Brendan Rodgers to the list of top managers who have been bewitched by this particular England international.

James Milner’s Manchester City contract is set to expire this summer and he’s thus far resisted any and all attempts to tie him down for any longer. This means that he’ll probably be available as a free transfer at the end of the season. Is it any wonder that Rodgers is interested?

Perhaps Milner has realised that at his age, game-time could indeed be limited at The Etihad in the coming years. He’s still very much a first teamer at the moment, but that may not always be the case.

Liverpool’s midfield isn’t so decked out with talent. This may hold some appeal for Milner, who will still get to play alongside top England internationals like Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling.

As for Liverpool, signing James Milner looks like a rather inexpensive gamble. Brendan Rodgers is known for his bargain signings and he may well have found another one here.

What’s your take? Could James Milner make an impact at Anfield?
