Martin MontoyaBrendan Rodger’s main priority during the summer transfer window should have been fixing his defense. After all, his team conceded 50 Premier League goals last season.

And whilst he did make a few important steps forward in this regard (like signing Dejan Lovren, who’s still settling in at Anfield), there’s still a lot of work to be done in this area. Liverpool are still capable of conceding goals at any given moment.

The form of Simon Mignolet hasn’t helped, but The Reds will certainly need to assess the state of their back-four during the January transfer window. They’re one of many English clubs who will be on the hunt for new additions in this part of the pitch.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Liverpool are ready and willing to ‘swoop on’ Barcelona full-back Martin Montoya. What’s more, the source suggests that the Spaniard would be willing to leave the Nou Camp should a good opportunity arise. Perhaps The Reds will fit the bill.

At the moment he’s Barca’s third choice right-back behind the likes of Dani Alves (who admittedly, is reaching the end of his current contract) and Douglas. With his route into the first team more or less blocked off, Montoya is right to consider his future. He’s 23-years-old now so he can’t afford to coast and let his career pass him by.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, he’s under contract until 2018. If Brendan Rodger’s interest is genuine, he’s going to have to pay a decent fee for the youngster. Still, it would be wrong of Barca to hold the player to ransom. If Brendan Rodgers’ can conjure up a fair amount of money, he’ll probably be able to convince Luis Enrique and co. to sell up.

This deal would allow Glen Johnson to move on, whilst giving Brendan Rodgers a means by which he can re-shape his defense. With that in mind, maybe The Reds should just be willing to pay whatever price it takes to close this deal?

What’s your take? Would Martin Montoya make a big difference for Liverpool Football Club?
