Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League FinalIn Manchester United’s search to find a fix to their defensive woes, they’ve been linked to a whole host of decent options.

Players like Mats Hummels, Aymeric Laporte, Raphael Varane and Miranda keep getting linked to The Red Devils again and again. But if it’s a centre-back that they’re after, I can’t help but feel that they should be chasing another player.

According to The Metro, The Red Devils are interested in signing Atletico Madrid’s big name defender Diego Godin. If Louis Van Gaal can pull this one off, he’ll have done an extremely smart piece of business.

I’d argue that Godin is the best defender in La Liga. He was one of the main reasons why Atletico won the La Liga title last season. He’s imperious in the air, positions himself well and wins a huge amount of tackles. If you want somebody who you can rely on, Godin’s your man.

What’s more, he’s got a huge amount of experience to his name. He’s made over 120 appearances for Atletico Madrid and he’s got 85 caps for the Uruguayan international team. He’s also won five major titles during his playing career. At 28-years-old, he’s not the youngest option on United’s defensive wish-list, but I’d argue that he’s the most well-rounded.

As you might have guessed, he’s not going to come cheap. Just look at how his manager Diego Simeone reacted when a journalist suggested that Godin could be available for £16m:

‘Let’s talk about something else… How much? Twenty [million Euros]? For Godin? It must be a mistake.’

It would be foolish for Atletico to sell at that price. He’s probably the most important part of their team. Letting him go would be a mistake. To let him go for a bargain price would be unforgivable.

But that’s not to say that Manchester United couldn’t pull this deal off. All they need to do is figure out Atletico’s asking price. Let’s hope that Louis Van Gaal and co are up to the task.

What’s your take? Is Diego Godin a good fit for The Red Devils?
