Maxi PereiraAll season long, Liverpool fans have been moaning about the continued existence of Glen Johnson. Not that they want the English right-back dead. They just don’t want to see him in a Liverpool shirt any longer.

Back in the day Johnson was one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. He’s quick, smart and he’s pretty direct. He’s never been the best crosser in the world, but his tendency to take defenders on and cut inside can cause all kinds of problems. Opposition players have learned to predict and counter this aspect of his game, so Glen Johnson has slowly but surely become less effective in the final third.

What’s more, Johnson’s defensive ability seems to be severely lacking (or at least somewhat inconsistent). Last season The Reds conceded 50 Premier League goals. They’ll probably repeat that feat if players like Johnson don’t pick up the slack. He’s often slow to track back, can be a little careless on the ball and doesn’t seem to distribute it well when he’s in possession.

I think it’s fair to say that Liverpool could do better. What’s more, I’d argue that Glen Johnson could probably use a fresh challenge in a new League.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Brendan Rodgers is currently in the process of hunting down a replacement for his lacklustre right-back. The man they’ve singled out is Benfica’s experienced full-back, Maxi Pereira. The source suggests that the Uruguayan ace could be available for as little as £4m during the January transfer window. That’s a deal that’s got to be worth considering.

That low price is probably down to his age. He’s now 30-years-old, which may look like a risk for Liverpool. Still, he’s achieved veteran status now and he’s a natural winner. He’s made over 300 appearances for Benfica and he’s won six major titles. Not too shabby, eh?

Besides, with his £4m price-tag, he’d hardly represent a huge gamble, would he?

What’s your take? Is Maxi Pereira a good option for The Reds? Is it time to send Glen Johnson packing?
