Layvin KurzawaMost of Arsenal’s issues this season have come down to Arsene Wenger’s failure to bring in one-or-two more defenders during the summer transfer window. Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck were great additions to the squad, but they can’t do much to atone for their club’s leaky back-four. As a result, Arsenal fans find themselves in a position where they are a couple of bodies short – again.

If only The Professor had opted to sign another centre-back and a proper defensive midfielder (it’s thoroughly depressing seeing Mathieu Flamini get so much game time – shouldn’t Arsenal have somebody who can head the ball in this position?), perhaps they would suffer such abject humiliation on a nearly weekly basis?

Whatever your take, it’s clear enough that The Gunners need to make some major changes to their defense during the January transfer window. If Arsene Wenger is going to turn things around, he’ll need to play smart next month.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Arsenal are ‘keen to sign’ Monaco’s highly-regarded young left-back, Layvin Kurzawa. The Gunners already have Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal in this part of the pitch, but given their injury problems, it may be smart to bring in somebody else. Besides, signing a third choice left-back would give Arsene Wenger the flexibility to play Nacho Monreal as a centre-back, whenever that is necessary.

Layvin Kurzawa is also a target for Manchester United, so he could be difficult to sign. It’s not like Monaco (who have plenty of cash), have any pressing need to sell. It’s thought that he could be available for £12m, a fee that’s certainly within Arsenal’s financial wheelhouse, if they’re prepared to go head to head with Louis Van Gaal and co.

Kurzawa has already broken into the French international team, so it looks like he’s a player that’s worth keeping your eye on. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger feels the same way. If he fails to bolster his defense it could cripple this Arsenal side.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal beat Manchester United to a deal to sign Layvin Kurzawa?
