At the end of the summer Liverpool looked extremely well placed. Yes, they had just lost Luis Suarez, but Brendan Rodgers had also managed to strengthen just about every area of the pitch. The Reds spent a lot of money and I’m sure that confidence among fans was as high as it has ever been.
Unfortunately, things just haven’t gone their way – not yet any way. Mario Balotelli has been a major flop. He hasn’t even managed to re-capture his Manchester United form, let alone the excellent form he showed during his time at AC Milan (30 goals in 54 games).
Then there’s Steven Gerrard, whose legs finally appear to be giving out. He’s been The Reds’ main source of inspiration for so long that it’s difficult to see where Brendan Rodger’s side should go from here. They could turn to Raheem Sterling, but he’s still young, inexperienced and he too is going through a rough patch of form.
This could force Brendan Rodgers back into action during the January transfer window. Fans will be hoping that he’s able to bring in a world-class player who’s capable of dragging this team back into contention.
This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Real Madrid are considering selling Karim Benzema. The source suggests that a number of high profile stars are set to leave The Bernabeu during the next couple of transfer windows, to help offset the Spanish powerhouses’ £479m debt and bring them in line with Financial Fair Play rules.
It’s also thought that Karim Benzema could be available for around £40m and that Manchester United and Arsenal are also interested (though shouldn’t those two clubs be more concerned with their defense?). If Liverpool really intend to sign this French striker, they’re going to have to shell out a lot of cash and fight off some major competition.
But sometimes that’s what it takes to sign big players. It’s time for Brendan Rodgers and co. to show their ambition.
