Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League FinalAtletico Madrid’s success last season surprised just about everybody. How dare another Spanish-based side threaten the established authority of clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid? It seemed like a very unlikely upset, but not an unwelcome one.

What a joy it was to see the giants of Spanish football get taken down a few pegs.

A major reason for Madrid’s success last season was the fact that they had Diego Godin marshaling their defense. The 28-year-old now has bags of experience to his name (he’s played more than 120 games for his current club and he’s won five major titles – oh and let’s not forget that he has 85 caps for the Uruguayan international team) and he’s started to find the best form of his footballing career.

He may not be a spring-chicken, but it would surprise very few if one of English football’s big clubs tried to snap him up during the next transfer window. It’s not like there’s a wealth of defensive talent out there at the moment. There’s Diego Godin, Mats Hummels, Aymeric Laporte, Raphael Varane and very few others. It’s only natural that the Uruguayan would attract a fair amount of attention.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United view Godin as a ‘potential January addition’. This strikes me as rather exciting news.

As things currently stand, the back-four is the weakest area of The Red Devils’ squad. Louis Van Gaal spent big on his attack during the summer, but he left his defense seriously under-cooked. If he’s able to wrap up a deal for Diego Godin, he’ll go some way towards rectifying this situation.

The aforementioned source claims that there is a £28.5m release clause written into the player’s Atletico Madrid contract. That’s a lot of money, but then again The Red Devils haven’t been too afraid to throw money at their problems in recent times. Perhaps Louis Van Gaal is preparing for another smash and grab this January?

What’s your take? Is Diego Godin the right man for Manchester United? Who else should they consider?
