Schneiderlin1At the time of writing, Arsenal are still enjoying a three game winning streak. After tough games against Anderlecht, Swansea City and Manchester United, the results against Borussia Dortmund, West Brom and Southampton will have come as sweet relief for fans. Perhaps this club can use these results as a launching pad for better performances (and results) throughout the rest of the year.

Still, despite this mini run of form, it’s clear that The Gunners still have work to do. If they’re to hit their best form again, they’re going to need more defensive personnel. More accurately, they’re going to need more top quality defenders.

In the centre of the park they’ve been relying on players like Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta to provide the goods defensively speaking. But with both footballers getting on in years, it’s not unreasonable to think that The Gunners could do a little bit better in this area. Don’t be surprised if this is one of Arsene Wenger’s main priorities this January.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are ‘finally’ set to sign Southampton’s midfield maestro, Morgan Schneiderlin. It’s thought that Arsene Wenger is ready and willing to lodge a £15m bid this January. Whether that’s enough to seal the deal remains to be seen, but this news should have fans excited.

The French midfielder was thought to be on Arsenal’s wish-list during the summer, but a move never materialised. The January transfer window could provide Arsene Wenger with an opportunity to rectify this situation. I hope he takes it.

Spurs are also thought to be interested, though you’d assume The Emirates would provide more appeal to Schneiderlin than White Hart Lane, especially given the French connection. What’s more, the player’s £15m price-tag should be well within Arsenal’s financial reach.

If Wenger can add Schneiderlin and a centre-back to his squad, The Gunners will be significantly stronger in the second part of the season. Whether it’s enough to lead them to further silverware remains to be seen.

What’s your take? Could The Gunners finally wrap up a deal for Morgan Schneiderlin?
