CLICKhediraThroughout the summer Arsenal were linked strongly with a move for Real Madrid’s midfield dynamo, Sami Khedira. The German ace looked like a perfect solution to The Gunners lack of defensive personnel.

He’s a defensive midfielder who’s good both on and off the ball. He works extremely hard, takes up smart positions and regularly manages to wrestle the ball back off of opposition players. When he’s in possession he’s able to make quick decisions and deliver the kind of pass that can change games.

Put it this way: I’m not all that surprised that Arsene Wenger was interested him.

Now that we’re part-way through this season, I doubt that The Professor’s priorities will have changed. He’s just as weak (if not weaker) in defensive areas as he was in the summer. As such, there’s a good chance that he’ll move back in for Sami Khedira when the January transfer window slides open.

Interestingly enough, The Metro carries quotes from Khedira himself, who remains open to a world of possibilities. Check them out:

‘It is a known fact that my contract expires [at the end of the season]. [The club and I] are always in good contact. I feel very comfortable in Madrid. I am not averse to staying. There are no talks with other clubs. I am curious myself to see where I will end up.’

That’s all well and good, Sami, but you would have to admit that it’s looking very unlikely that you will stay at The Bernabeu past this season. The fact that you’re curious to see where you might end up suggests that your head may be elsewhere.

With Khedira’s contract set to run out at the end of the season, Arsenal can sign him on a free contract at that stage or try and secure a cut-price deal next month. Given The Gunners’ pressing need, I’d argue there’s no point waiting. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger feels the same way.

What’s your take? Could The Gunners still sign Sami Khedira?
