Should Manchester United make this £44m investment?

Radamel FalcaoBefore too long, Louis Van Gaal is going to have a major decision to make regarding his Colombian forward, Radamel Falcao. The 28-year-old has bags of talent, but does he have enough to justify shelling out £44m to Monaco to keep him on a long-term basis?

That’s not entirely clear at the moment, especially when you consider that The Red Devils have already paid £6m for his loan deal. That would amount to a total of £50m spent on the Colombian. If Van Gaal wants to keep him, he isn’t going to come cheap. Then again, talent rarely does.

United are currently shelling out £265k-a-week for Falcao, an investment that hasn’t been matched by the player’s on pitch exploits. The Colombian spent much of last season out injured and it looks like he’s yet to fully recover. He’s spent most of this season on the sidelines with a calf injury.

When he has played, he hasn’t exactly been at his free flowing best. Perhaps this is because he hasn’t been fully fit, or perhaps this is because he’s struggling to adapt to the pace of the Premier League (which is a significant step up from Ligue 1). Either way, I’m sure that Manchester United fans expected a little bit more.

According to The Express, there are now ‘doubts about whether the club will follow up their initial commitment’ and tie Radamel Falcao down to a long-term deal. The Red Devils are in a tough position here. Falcao’s goal-scoring record makes it entirely clear that he’s one of the best strikers in the world. Still, there’s no denying that signing him in the long-term would be something of a gamble on the part of Louis Van Gaal.

Luckily, there’s no immediate need for Manchester United to arrive at their decision. The club has a little bit more time to decide whether the player is a good fit for them. Radamel Falcao has little more time to prove his fitness.

Let’s just hope that he’s able to shake off his injury concerns and prove worthy of his price-tag.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United sign Radamel Falcao on a long-term basis?
