Many of Arsenal’s problems this season have been self-imposed, but there’s no doubt that they’ve been subject to some bad luck as well. Refereeing decisions haven’t always gone their way this season and their injury record is nothing short of atrocious.
It’s difficult to know where to lay the blame. Is it Arsene Wenger’s fault for over-working these players? Is is the player’s fault for not monitoring and maintaining their own fitness? Is it the physio’s thought? It’s difficult to say really.
Either way, Arsenal are now facing an injury crisis in defensive and midfield positions. It’s got so bad that it really wouldn’t be too surprising to see Arsene Wenger bring in a few new fresh bodies during the January transfer window. Fans will certainly be crossing their fingers in the hope that he chooses to do exactly that.
With Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta out with long-term injuries, it strikes me that The Gunners need a little more competitive edge in the centre of the park.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal currently have their eyes on Newcastle United’s midfield talent, Moussa Sissoko. Some fans may turn their nose up at this deal, but there’s no doubt that the Frenchman has played a key role in helping the Magpies adjust to life without Yohan Cabaye.
He’s also helped Newcastle to turn their season around. In a year where Alan Pardew’s side have struggled to show their best form, Sissoko has helped get his team back into contention. In fact, The Magpies are currently doing rather well.
Whether he’s the perfect option for Arsenal remains to be seen, but he’s certainly worth considering. According to the aforementioned source, Moussa Sissoko could cost as much as £15m. If that’s what it takes to add some steel to The Gunners midfield, then so be it.
Let’s just hope Arsene Wenger is ready and willing to splash the cash.
