Do Arsenal REALLY need to sign this £12m Serie A star?

Alessio CerciArsenal have really been blowing fans hot and cold this season. Arsene Wenger brought in fantastic new additions like Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck, but he forgot to soup up his defense, which has now fallen into a state of disrepair. As a result, when teams ‘come at’ The Gunners, they tend to expose cracks, score goals and knock this club’s confidence.

How else can you explain Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat by Borussia Dortmund early on this season? Or their 2-0 defeat against Chelsea? What about the 3-3 draw with Anderlecht? The 2-1 defeat against a weak Manchester United side? The embarrassing 3-2 defeat by Stoke City? The list, unfortunately, goes on.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Arsene Wenger reacts in the January transfer window. My guess is that he’ll stick to the same tried and tested approach that he always has, by signing new and exciting attacking talent.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsene Wenger is mulling over a deal to sign an Italian winger (despite already being able to call upon the likes of Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez, Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and others).

The man in question is Atletico Madrid star, Alessio Cerci, who has been linked to Arsenal for at least a year now. In his last season at Serie A side Torino, Cerci played 37 times and scored 13 goals. He’s got pace, technique and he’s really direct. He could prove to be a good option for a Premier League club. It’s thought that he would cost £12m.

Since moving to Madrid, his match-time has been a little more limited. He’s only played 5 times, but has found the back of the net once (and he earned a red card during a game against Valencia).

Whether he’ll want to move again on so soon after changing clubs remains to be seen, but it’s certainly worth testing the waters to gauge his interest level. He’s not a signing that Arsenal need to make, but that wouldn’t stop be from getting excited if Arsene Wenger did manage to pull this one off.

What’s your take? Do Arsenal really need Alessio Cerci? Should they have other priorities?
