Martin MontoyaBrendan Rodgers took some strides to improve his defense in the summer transfer window, but I think it’s fair to say that these steps didn’t quite pay off – not yet any way. Liverpool fans may well emphasize the need for patience, but with their club slipping down the Premier League table (and getting dumped out of the Champions League), I can’t help but feel that they need to act.

At this stage in the club’s evolution, Brendan Rodgers can’t afford to sit still. The good will that last season conjured up is all but disappearing. Let’s just hope that Liverpool are able to recapture some of that magic again before this year draws to a close.

So let’s get back to that defense. According to The Metro, Liverpool are still on the hunt for Barcelona’s ace young right-back, Martin Montoya. The Spaniard has grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of viable opportunities available for him at the Nou Camp. It looks like he’s going to be seeking regular game time elsewhere.

The aforementioned source even carries quotes from the player’s agent, Juan de Dios Carrasco (great name!), who makes it clear that Montoya’s on his way out at Barcelona:

‘We will leave the club in January, there are interested clubs from England, Italy and Germany. Montoya wants to leave Barcelona and thinks the club is a gentleman and will respect the agreement that he can leave.’

Barcelona haven’t always acted gentlemanly in the transfer market, but you’d have to hope that they would be willing to let Motoya go if they’re not prepared to offer him a considerable amount of game time over the coming months.

This situation could let Liverpool sneak in and grab their man.

As you might expect, Montoya is a better attacker than he is a defender, but he’s still developing and could well blossom into a world-class talent. He strikes me as a man that’s worth backing, especially if Brendan Rodgers can get him for a fair price.

What’s your take? Is Martin Montoya a good fit for The Reds?
