MartinezCould Roberto Soldado be one of the worst signings of the Premier League era? In 47 appearances for Spurs, he’s scored only 13 goals. He’s certainly accrued a roster of attempts on goal that can be considered some of the greatest footballing misses of the last decade or so.

With Emmanuel Adebayor also failing to provide the goods, Spurs have been forced to rely on youngsters like Harry Kane. It’s not an ideal situation. It wouldn’t be all that surprising to see Mauricio Pochettino bring somebody else in during the January transfer window.

Perhaps he could even use the opportunity to send Roberto Soldado packing, whilst the Spanish centre-forward still has some value attributed to him?

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Spurs will attempt to sign FC Porto’s superstar striker, Jackson Martinez. It’s thought that they’ll offer the Portuguese side Roberto Soldado and cash in an attempt to see the deal through. If Daniel Levy and co. really are interested, they’ll have to see off interest from Liverpool, who are also in desperate need of a new forward.

Just look at Martinez’s goal-scoring record. In 109 games for FC Porto, he’s scored 74 goals. What’s more, he appears to be getting better and better. This season he’s made 18 appearances and has found the back of the net 14 times.

At 28-years-old, he’s an established, experienced option. He’s a year younger than Soldado, but would surely be able to offer a lot more. I’m sure that Spurs fans wouldn’t be too sad to see the Spaniard go.

In many ways, it would represent a clean break from the Andre Villas-Boas/Tim Sherwood era of Tottenham’s history and an opportunity for Mauricio Pochettino to stamp his own mark on this side.

Whether FC Porto have any real interest in Roberto Soldado remains to be seen, but it’s certainly worth testing the waters. He’s one of few players in world football who can provide an instant solution to Spurs’ goal-scoring blues.

What’s your take? Would you swap Roberto Soldado for Jackson Martinez?

Up until yesterday I was still sure Soldado would come good as, apart from his lack of goals, his workrate and contribution was very good and surely the goals would eventually come as you don’t suddenly lose that ability? Especially after scoring a good goal against Everton. However, he missed three very good chances yesterday and I’m now statring to lose faith.

As for Martinez, hsaven’t seen him play enough and he could face the same problems as Soldado in adapting to the Premier League.
