Could Liverpool really sign this want-away Everton star?

MirallasVery few players end up crossing the Merseyside divide, so when the papers cook up a rumour suggesting that somebody will be moving from Everton to Liverpool (or vice versa) it tends to capture people’s attention. Nobody likes to see their club sell players to a rival, but when it comes to these two fan-bases, their level of attachment is bordering on obsessive.

As it happens, Liverpool are going through a tough time at the moment. They were dumped out of the Champions League by a tough FC Basel side and they’re struggling to get the results they need in the Premier League. Their main issue, it seems, is a lack of fire-power upfront.

Brendan Rodgers must have thought he found the right solution when he signed Mario Balotelli in the summer, but the Italian has proven to be something of a damp squib. He may yet come good, but I certainly won’t be holding my breath. In the meanwhile, The Reds have just had to wait for Daniel Sturridge to recover from his injury, but this is taking some time.

It’s about time to get pro-active. With the January transfer window fast approaching, Rodgers will have an opportunity to swing into action. This brings me back to that whole ‘Merseyside divide’ thing. According to The Metro, The Reds have set their sights on Everton star Kevin Mirallas.

The Belgian forward has already spoken out about his desire for a new challenge and may fancy his shot at a club like Liverpool. The Reds aren’t in a particularly good place at the moment, but they do have history (and more financial firepower) on their side.

Mirallas has proven to be an effective force down the wings for The Toffees. In 82 outings, he’s found the back of the net 22 times. This season alone, he has scored 5 goals in 12 games, which is a pretty handy return. Looking at Liverpool’s current options, it’s clear enough that he’d represent an improvement.

Everton won’t want to sell, but given Mirallas’ current contractual situation, they may be forced into action. It’ll be interesting to see if Brendan Rodgers can capitalise on the situation.

What’s your take? Could Liverpool really sign Kevin Mirallas?

Mirallas said he’d leave if Everton didn’t make Europe. So why why WHY would he want to go to the RS? Just how stupid are you?
