Despite securing a 2-2 draw against Liverpool, The Gunners actually managed to register one of their worst performances in recent memory. They were bad against the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Anderlecht and Manchester United, but they took things to the next level at Anfield.
So many players failed to register any kind of performances. Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain didn’t look fit. Per Mertesacker looked completely overawed by the situation. Danny Welbeck was anonymous. Only Santi Cazorla, Mathieu Debuchy, Wojciech Szczesny and perhaps Olivier Giroud produced the goods. The rest of them ought to be thoroughly disappointed with themselves.
It’s clear that The Gunners have a lot of work to do during the January transfer window. This brings me to some comments from former Arsenal midfielder, Ray Paylor. The Romford Pele recently spoke out about who he believes that Arsene Wenger should sign next month:
‘Winston Reid has been mentioned, but I’m not sure he’s the quality we need. Mats Hummels would be great, a world cup winner and a good player. For midfield, I would go for [Morgan] Schneiderlin if you can get him. He’s at a good age. Lots of players are linked. [Sami] Khedira would have been great. Players that have played in big games won’t be phased by anything. Schneiderlin hasn’t, but I can see him improving.’ (Source: The Metro)
So the two players that Parlour thinks Arsenal need to sign are Mats Hummels and Morgan Schneiderlin as Winston Reid and Sami Khedira just aren’t up to snuff. I have to say, at this stage I’d take any of those four players, but Hummels and Schneiderlin do look like the best possible options.
The Borussia Dortmund centre-back is one of the best defenders in the world. Schneiderlin, on the other hand, is a very impressive, relatively young holding midfielder. He’s an awesome talent.
With both of these player in tow, The Gunners would be a lot more solid defensively. There’d be less need to rely on players like Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger has enough cash ready to close these deals.
