Manchester United’s season has been a little stop-start thus far. The Red Devils are spoiled for choice in attacking positions and on the face of things, they have more than enough quality to challenge for silverware.
Unfortunately, when a group of new players are brought in, it often takes some time for these new additions to gel with one another. There’s no doubting that the likes of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria will make an impact over the coming years, but for now, Manchester United need to remain patient.
More importantly, they need to sort out their midfield. With players like Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini providing diminishing returns and Michael Carrick out injured, I wouldn’t be surprised if Louis Van Gaal considered signing some fresh talent this January.
Yes, they spent a lot of money last summer, but let’s hope that their spending spree isn’t quite over.
According to The Metro, Manchester United have set their sites on signing Juventus’ highly-regarded midfielder, Claudio Marchisio, It’s thought that Arsenal are also interested, but in truth, The Red Devils have been on the hunt for this Italian ace for quite some time.
Manchester United’s main challenge will be tempting Marchisio away from Juventus. The aforementioned source claims that the Serie A side are attempting to tie the 28-year-old down to a three year contract extension, with the promise of a higher salary.
It’s rare that a player of his age receives a pay-rise of this nature. Louis Van Gaal and co. will need to decide whether they’re willing to match this or steer clear.
For what it’s worth, I can’t help but feel that Marchisio would be the perfect choice for Manchester United. He offers the uncanny mix of physicality, defensive nous and effectiveness in the final third. He’d add a certain competitive edge that The Red Devils are currently lacking.
With that in mind, let’s hope that Van Gaal is prepared to battle it out with both Arsenal and Juventus to win this man’s signature.
