Arsenal are yet to find any real form, but they’ve finally started to put a few decent results together. They were outclassed by an unimpressive Anderlecht side, but managed to win the game 2-1. They were lacklustre against Sunderland (who had just been beaten 8-0 the week previous), but still managed to win 2-0.
It’s all very ho-hum, but if Arsenal can stay in contention up until the January transfer window, who knows that they’ll be capable of. It’s clear to everyone and anyone that The Gunners are seriously lacking in defensive personnel. Since Arsene Wenger sent both Bacary Sagna and Thomas Vermaelen packing in the summer, the team just hasn’t been the same.
The January transfer window will give Arsenal an opportunity to rectify this situation. If they’re still in the running for the Premier League title chase, it could even give them the boost they need to go on and win some more silverware.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal ‘must’ sign West Ham star, Winston Reid. I have to say, I’m in full agreement.
The Hammers have been working hard to tie Winston Reid down to a new long-term deal. His current contract will expire next summer, when he’ll be available as a free transfer. If new terms aren’t agreed, The Gunners might consider snapping him up in January for a bargain fee. The aforementioned source claims that he could be available for as little £6m.
That’s a bargain for a player with a wealth of Premier League experience (100 plus games). He’s currently a part of an impressive looking West Ham side and he’s been in excellent form for the last year or so. Like Per Mertesacker, he’s something of a man mountain. He’s 6 foot 3 inches tall, but unlike Arsenal’s captain, he’s pretty mobile and will react quickly to dangerous situations.
Winston Reid will add physicality, aerial dominance and defensive nous to this Arsenal team. What’s not to like? Let’s hope he’s already on Arsene Wenger’s wish-list.
