Should Arsenal consider re-signing Alex Song?

Alex Song (Barcelona)Few people in world football have undergone as many transformations as West Ham midfielder, Alex Song.

When he first arrived at Arsenal, fans weren’t quite sure what to make of him. He was enthusiastic but largely ineffectual and there were those who felt he wouldn’t make it in North London.

Despite this first impression he managed to turn things around. He proved that he was an astute defensive midfielder with almost boundless energy, who also happened to be pretty handy going forward. In his last season with Arsenal, his most eye-catching moments involved his long-distance passes for Robin Van Persie, who thrived off of the Cameroonian’s service.

Unfortunately, Song seemed to get a little too big for his boots. In 2012 he left Arsenal and ended up moving to Barcelona, where he spent most of the time warming the bench.

In hindsight, the move was extraordinarily foolish – there’s just no way that Song was ever going to jump ahead of the likes of Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano in the pecking order.

Luckily the 27-year-old had one last transformation left in him. During the summer, he took a step down in quality and agreed to move to West Ham on loan. This could prove to be a masterstroke: his career is well and truly back on track and he’s sure to attract bigger suitors again at some stage.

His performances for The Hammers have been very impressive indeed. He’s been a major part of a side that has beaten title-contenders Manchester City 2-1 and Liverpool 3-1. It looks like he’s got his mojo back.

This has sparked claims that Arsenal should re-sign their former defensive midfielder (as highlighted by The Metro). Given Arsenal’s current defensive predicament, I can’t help but agree.

Not only is Alex Song in form, he’s versatile. He can play as a defensive midfielder, or as a centre-back. Given Arsenal’s injury problems, I have little doubt that Alex Song would get plenty of game time.

The player himself will be provided with another opportunity to prove that he’s good enough to play for a big club. Based on his current performances, I’m sure he’d come up trumps.

Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger is willing to give him another shot.

What’s your take? Is Alex Song the right man for Arsenal? Should Arsenal really be raking over old coals?
