Should Manchester United sign this £51m dynamic German duo?

Manchester United may not be back to their best (not quite yet any way), but the way they’ve held their own against the Premier League big boys has been fairly impressive.

Now you may argue that a team that spent £150m during the summer should be able to compete with the Chelseas and the Manchester Citys of this world. Still, The Red Devils are a team that are lacking in self-belief and know-how. At the moment, they’re a collection of players who have been thrown together and are not quite gelling under Louis Van Gaal.

In that light, a 1-1 draw against Chelsea was a good result and their performance against Manchester City (with ten men) was worthy of applause.

Naturally enough, Van Gaal still has his work cut out for him. You get the feeling that he’s going to be busy during the January transfer window.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Van Gaal is considering making a move for German duo: Julian Draxler and Benedikt Howedes. Both players are currently employeed by Schalke 04 and they’re believed to have a total price-tag of £51m (£14m for Howedes and £37m for Draxler).

In other words, it looks like Manchester United’s spending spree is set to continue during the next iteration of the transfer window.

It’s difficult to see where Draxler (an exciting attacking midfielder) might fit into this Manchester United side, but there’s little doubt that he’s an exciting option. He could be a better fit for The Red Devils than say, Juan Mata.

I’d actually argue that Howedes is the player that Manchester United need (despite his relatively small price tag). The 26-year-old is versatile (he’s primarily a centre-back, but he can also play as a right back, or as a left back), he’s strong and he’s smart. At 6 foot 2 inches tall, he’d help to strengthen Manchester United in the air.

If he’s really available for just £14m, I’d argue that he would be a bargain. Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal feels the same way.
