Mats HummelsIt’s taken a while for The Gunners to find their groove, but it looks like Arsene Wenger’s boys are finally piecing things together. After eeking out a series of disappointing performances (where their defense leaked goals and their attack failed to click), they’ve managed to win three games in a row (a late 2-1 victory over Anderlecht, a 2-0 victory over a dogged Sunderland side and a solid 3-0 victory over Burnley).

As you’ll have noticed that’s two clean sheets in a row for The Gunners. Given what we’ve seen so far this year, that’s a major step forward.

Arsenal went into the season with limited options (defensively speaking) and this issue has been exacerbated through an injury crisis. At the moment they’re without Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy, two of the most important and experienced members of their back-four.

That beings said, there’s still plenty of room for improvement during the January transfer window. There’s every reason to believe that Arsene Wenger will strengthen his back-line as soon as possible.

This leads me neatly onto The Metro’s claim that Arsenal are in ‘very advanced’ talks to sign Borussia Dortmund’s superstar centre-back, Mats Hummels. The German World Cup winner is one of the best defenders in the world. If Arsenal are really close to sign him, fans have every reason to be excited.

The aforementioned source claims that Hummels would set The Gunners back £31.5m. That’s a huge amount of money, but it’s probably reflects his value. The 25-year-old has bags of experience at a relatively young age. He’s tall, physically strong, positions himself well and he’s good in the air.

He’s not unlike a cross between Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. As such, it’s fairly easy to see him fitting into this Arsenal side and making a name for himself in the Premier League.

Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger really is able to close this deal. Hummels could make all the difference.

What’s your take? Is Mats Hummels the right choice for The Gunners?
