Should Arsenal snap up this £10m Manchester United star?

Arsenal’s defense has been subject to a lot of criticism thus far this season and a lot of it has been deserved. If you saw The Gunners performance against Anderlecht during their mid-week Champions League outing, I’m sure you’ll agree. There’s something amiss at the heart of Arsenal’s defense and it’s having a sapping effect on the rest of the squad. A creeping uncertainty has crept in and it’s already beginning to look like Arsenal won’t be in a position to challenge for silverware this season.

You can’t let a 3-0 lead slip at home (against Anderlecht of all clubs) and expect to get much out of the rest of the season. That’s more or less unheard of.

With all that in mind, you can bet that Arsene Wenger will be working hard throughout the January transfer window to find some fresh new options. Arsenal need a least one more centre-back and another defensive midfielder. Let’s hope that The Gunners’ scouts are already on the hunt.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are in the market to sign Manchester United star Chris Smalling. The Red Devils centre-back’s stock is currently at an all time low having picked up a ‘stupid’ red card during the Manchester derby. Arsene Wenger may well view this as a good thing. After all, it’s fairly evident that Smalling is a good player – if his latest disciplinary blunder drives his price down, then The Gunners could profit as a result.

He’s got bag-loads of Premier League experience and he’s got caps at International level. He could be an astute purchase on the part of Arsene Wenger. The aforementioned source suggests that he could be available for £10m. Given that Arsenal got Danny Welbeck for a fair fee, fans will be hoping that they can pull off a similar feat with Smalling.

I’m sure Arsenal fans will be hoping for other options, but should this deal go ahead I certainly won’t turn my nose up at it.
