Should Arsenal move in for this exciting £40m starlet?

It can’t be an easy time to be an Arsenal fan. The Gunners haven’t lost their goal-scoring touch, but they’ve proven to be as brittle as ever in recent weeks. Arsene Wenger’s team has a reputation for letting leads slip and they haven’t let us down this season. Last week they let a 3-0 lead slip against Anderlecht and a 1-0 lead over Swansea soon turned to a 2-1 defeat.

For a team who should be challenging for the Premier League, this quite simply isn’t good enough.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Arsene Wenger reacts in the January transfer window. One thing’s for sure: drastic action is needed.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsene Wenger has his eyes on Benfica starlet Goncalo Guedes. The Portuguese ace has earned an amazing reputation, despite being only 17-years-old. In fact, he’s already been labelled the ‘next Cristiano Ronaldo’.

That’s a lot of pressure to put on a young footballer’s shoulders, but he looks more than ready to start meeting his potential. Guedes is lightning quick, he’s technically astute and he’s a smart cookie. It’ll take some time for him to get truly effective in the final third, but the signs are good. Once he fills out and adds some physicality to his game, he’s going to be a real asset.

The Metro suggest that Benfica are trying to tie Guedes down with a new contract and a £40m release clause.

It’s hard to picture Arsene Wenger spending that much money on a 17-year-old, especially given Arsenal’s current circumstances, but the youngster’s price-tag is further evidence of his quality. If he achieves half as much as Cristiano Ronaldo throughout his career, he’ll prove to be worthy of his £40m valuation.

Still, there’s no doubting that he’d be a gamble. It’s time for Arsene Wenger to decide whether he wants to roll the dice. Sure, he’ll need to fix his defense during the January transfer window, but I can’t help but hope that The Professor also takes a risk on an exciting young talent like this.
