Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)Manchester United spent the majority of their summer spending their cash like a kid in a candy store on pocket-money day. They brought in a raft of new players in the hope that they would help steer the club back onto the a more successful pathway. Unfortunately, The Red Devils are still struggling.

Players like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao have both made their mark, but United haven’t had enough overall to shake themselves out of their slumber. They’ve probably been better than they were last season, but that’s not saying much.

With all this in mind, I can’t help but wonder what Louis Van Gaal will do in the January transfer window. Having already spent big in the summer, will he still have the cash necessary to make major new signings or will he have to slum it in the bargain bin?

Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping that he’s granted a hefty transfer kitty. It looks like The Red Devils still need to take drastic action if they’re to turn things around.

This leads me neatly onto The Metro‘s outrageous claim that Manchester United have ‘moved a step closer’ to agreeing a deal to sign Real Madrid wing-wizard, Gareth Bale. The source even goes as far as to suggest that Real Madrid have ‘put the player up for sale’. After a little over a year at the club this seems a little difficult to believe.

Still, The Metro report that Carlo Ancelotti favours Spanish starlet Isco to Gareth Bale and for this reason, he’s willing to sell up. It’s thought that they’d be willing to cash in on the Welshman for £90m (a little more than they paid for him two summers ago) and that Manchester United would offer him £300k-a-week.

In other words, Louis Van Gaal would have to smash The Red Devils’ transfer record once again if he’s to get his man. I have to say, this one strikes me as a little unlikely, but I’ll still be keeping my fingers crossed. They do call Old Trafford the Theatre of Dreams, after all.

What’s your take? Could Manchester United really be in the market for Gareth Bale?
