Simon Mignolet has now made 53 appearances for Liverpool and fans are starting to lose their patience. After making a relatively good start to his time with The Reds, he has quickly started to offer diminishing returns.
He’s still capable of the occasional Man of the Match performance, but he’s also capable of the occasional stinker. Let’s not forget that he was part of a defense that conceded 50 Premier League goals last season. Unfortunately, things haven’t been much better this year. The Reds are struggling and their goal keeper is partly at fault for this.
I’d argue that the former Sunderland man doesn’t command his area quite as well as he should. He’s not a leader and from what we’ve seen thus far, his organisational skills need some work. With the errors that have begun to creep into his game, he’s at risk of becoming a liability.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool are seriously considering making an ‘offer’ for Espanyol’s highly regarded goal-keeper, Kiko Casilla. Could this Spanish ace be the right man to provide Mignolet with the competition that he seems to need?
The 28-year-old came up through Real Madrid’s youth system before moving to Espanyol in 2007. He’s since made 85 appearances for the club and has enjoyed a few fruitful loan moves to clubs like Cadiz and Cartagena. Since 2001, he’s looked more settled and has begun to deliver more consistent and impressive performances.
I’d argue that he’s ready for a move to a bigger club. Luckily, the aforementioned source reports that The Reds have ‘made a proposal’ to Casilla (how romantic!) for him to move to Anfield during the January transfer martket. They also suggest that he won’t be playing second fiddle to Simon Mignolet. He’s moving to Anfield to become Liverpool’s ‘first-choice glovesman’.
This would represent a major step forward for Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers. Let’s just hope that he’s able to see this deal through.
