Kevin Strootman (PSV)Manchester United spent a huge amount of cash in the summer, but if rumours are to be believed, things aren’t going to slow down when the January transfer window rolls by. Louis Van Gaal looks like he’s determined to spend his way out of the hole that his club is currently in. Whether this proves to be an effective tactic remains to be seen, but it’s certainly exciting for the fans.

Van Gaal will need to look at his defense when the transfer window re-opens, but it’ll be interesting to see if he also dedicates any time switching up his midfield.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are still in the market for two long-term targets. The players in question are Roma’s holding midfielder, Kevin Strootman and Fiorentina’s explosive winger, Juan Cuadrado. Could this double signing help to elevate Manchester United?

They’re certainly good options. There’s a reason why Manchester United have been linked to them for so long.

Kevin Strootman has previously been labelled, ‘The Dutch Roy Keane’. With The Red Devils struggling defensively, it wouldn’t surprise anybody if Manchester United snapped up somebody with this much competitive edge. He’d represent a marked improvement on the likes of Daley Blind.

Then there’s Juan Cuadrado, who’s an exciting attacking player with plenty of flair. The Colombian ace enjoyed a fantastic World Cup, where he gave his team-mates 4 assists and scored 1 goal. Not a bad return for a player who’s renowned for being effective in the final third.

Of the two players, I’d argue that Juan Cuadrado is the least essential purchase (given the players that Manchester United already have in attacking positions), but I certainly wouldn’t complain if The Red Devils splashed out on the both of them.

The Metro suggests that Strootman would cost £40m, whilst Cuadrado would cost £30m. £70m is a lot of money, but Manchester United haven’t been shy of spending big in recent times. Let’s hope that this doesn’t change over the next 12 months.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United spend £70m on Kevin Strootman and Juan Cuadrado?
