Is this £8m Celtic star the PERFECT Arsenal target?

If Arsenal were a bit more defensively solid who knows what they could achieve. Arsene Wenger is renowned for filling his team with attacking talent, but this time around he seems to have got the balance all wrong. To go into a season with just 6 recognised members of back-four is a serious error of judgement.

It’s even affecting The Gunners going forward, as they don’t have a solid base to build upon. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger is already drawing up a wishlist of potential targets for the January transfer window.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Gunners will attempt to ‘relieve the pressure on their threadbare defense’ by making a move for Celtic’s highly rated centre-back, Virgil van Dijk. I’m sure that fans will be overjoyed at this news.

At the moment, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are Arsenal’s only out-and-out centre-backs. Sure, Calum Chambers can also play in that position, but he’s also only 19-years-old and has more experience as a right-back. Arsene Wenger needs to bring in a back-up option and he needs to do so as soon as possible.

The aforementioned source claims that Arsenal have sent scouts to watch the player in action and that they’ve received good reports back. It’s thought that an £8m deal could be on the cards.

That’s not a bad fee for a player who’s just 23-years-old and has shown as lot of potential. It’s also a fee that shouldn’t trouble Arsenal too much. They’ve got more than enough financial firepower to seal the deal.

He won’t come to The Emirates expecting to displace Mertesacker and Koscielny immediately. He’ll know it will be necessary to bide his time and wait for the opportunity to arise. If he’s good enough, he’ll take full advantage of any game-time he receives and he’ll help make Arsenal more competitive.

That looks like a good step forward for The Gunners.
