Gareth BaleIn the last few weeks, we’ve seen a lot of rumours linking The Red Devils with a spectacular move for their former star, Cristiano Ronaldo. Wouldn’t it be something if that deal were to come to pass.

As it happens, it seems that The Metro weren’t satisfied with this claim. With one of their recent articles, they kicked the rumour mill up a couple gears. According to this source, Manchester United are now in the market to sign Gareth Bale.

That’s right, the same Gareth Bale who who left Spurs two summers ago as part of a huge £85m deal. He’s one of the few players in world football who would command a price-tag bigger than that which currently belongs to Cristiano Ronaldo.

As such, perhaps it’s not all that surprising that Manchester United have been linked to him. In their quest to save the club from mediocrity, Louis Van Gaal and co. have shown a surprising willingness to throw cash at their problems. Signing Gareth Bale could be the natural evolution of their current outlook.

Since moving to The Bernabeu, Gareth Bale has continued to impress. He’s scored 27 goals in 55 games, despite being in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s a superbly talented individual who’s adapted with ease to his new situation. It’s easy enough to see why Real Madrid were willing to spend big on him.

According to The Metro, Gareth Bale has fallen out with many of his team-mates, because of his ‘selfishness’. Are these the same footballers who play week-in and week-out with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema?

Either way, if he’s unhappy at his current club, it could provide him with a reason to force a move away. The aforementioned source claims that Manchester United would have to cough up £90m to make a deal happen. Whether they’ve got enough in the bank to make a deal happen remains to be seen.

One thing’s for sure, it’s a signing that would get the fans believing again. Gareth Bale has the talent, passion and know-how to launch Manchester United back into the big time. With Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao also in tow, how could Louis Van Gaal fail?

What’s your take? Could Manchester United really compete for Gareth Bale?
