Arsenal’s main priority this January (and next summer), will be bringing in some new defensive recruits, but it wouldn’t surprise too many people if Arsene Wenger were to also bolster his attack. The Gunners boss seems to enjoy surprising fans (and pundits) at every turn and has always been keen to utilise the most impressive attacking line-up possible.
He already brought in Danny Welbeck last summer (and the young Englishman has been in fine fettle) and tied Olivier Giroud down to a long-term deal, but there could be more to come in the centre-forward department.
He only needs to look at Chelsea for an example of how much of an impact signing a world class centre-forward can have on a team.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Real Madrid are ‘willing to sell Karim Benzema for the right price’. Given the French connection here, surely Arsenal are likely to be interested, if Benzema really is available?
After finding his goal-scoring form at Lyon, the Frenchman has enjoyed 5 full seasons at The Bernabeu. You don’t spend that long at a top club unless you’ve got something special about your game. Indeed, you just need to look at his goal-scoring record if you want evidence of what kind of player he is. In 246 games for Real Madrid, Benzema has found the back of the net 116 times. Not too shabby, eh?
Better still, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He’s played 11 games this season and has scored 6 goals. At 26-years-old, there’s a good argument to suggest that he’s now at the peak of his game. Now could be a good time to snap him up, if Real Madrid are willing to sell at a fair price.
There’s no word as to how much Benzema might cost, but if he proves to be The Gunners’ Diego Costa, then they should be willing to spend big. It’ll certainly be interesting to watch this one play out.
