Gareth BaleLooking back, it’s fair to say that Manchester United had one hell of a summer. The Red Devils went out with a lot of money and they brought in a lot of big name players. Footballers like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao look likely to make an impact at Old Trafford for many years to come (though the Colombian ace will need to sign a long-term deal first).

Despite all this expenditure, fans still feel a little bit let down by their club’s lack of new defensive recruits. This makes me wonder how they’re going to take the following piece of news.

According to The Metro, The Red Devils are ready to break their transfer record (once again) by making a move for Real Madrid superstar, Gareth Bale. Indeed, Manchester United will probably need to break the world transfer record if they’re to secure the Welshman. The aforementioned source suggests that a £90m bid could be on the cards.

Whether Real Madrid will sell for that much remains to be seen, but it should certainly give them pause for thought.

Naturally enough, should this deal come to pass, there’ll be plenty of surprised Manchester United fans. It wouldn’t be so surprising to see The Red Devils target another Real Madrid star: Cristiano Ronaldo. After all, the Portuguese ace has a history at Old Trafford.

Bale on the other hand associates his time in the Premier League with Spurs and he’s only been in Spain for one full season. I’m sure he’ll want to wait things out and make sure that he’s deemed a success in his new surroundings.

It’s not like he’s not enjoying his football in Madrid. Last season he made 44 appearances for the Galacticos and found the back of the net 22 times. Is it any wonder that Louis Van Gaal and co. are interested?

He’s considerably younger than Cristiano Ronaldo, has Premier League experience and is a natural born winner. If The Red Devils were to pull this deal off, they’d surely be ready to re-enter the big-time, regardless of their defensive frailties.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United really be chasing Gareth Bale?
