Mesut OzilWhen Arsene Wenger signed Mesut Ozil last summer (as part of a £42.4m deal), it spread a wave of good feeling among Arsenal fans. His first few performances demonstrated what a good signing he was, as he made multiple assists against Sunderland and scored a stunning goal against Napoli in the Champions League.

Fairly quickly, however, Mesut Ozil’s performances began to suffer. As Arsenal came up against tougher, more motivated Premier League teams, The Germans’ possession game was seriously effected. For the last 12 months or so, he’s looked like a player who’s playing his football at a La Liga pace, rather than a Premier League pace.

If you’ve watched an Arsenal game recently, I’m sure you’ll be deeply frustrated at his tendency to dwell on the ball, or turn into trouble. I think it’s fair to say that the wave of good feeling is starting to disperse. Mesut Ozil’s name now seems to conjure bemusement and frustration. Arsenal haven’t got a huge return on their £42.4m expenditure.

Still, nobody would have wished a three month long injury lay-off on the German. Every Arsenal fan wants to see Mesut back to his best and this mammoth injury lay-off is going to delay things further.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Mesut Ozil has ‘played his last game in an Arsenal shirt’. The source suggests that Ozil is unhappy with his current role with The Gunners and is keen to engineer a move away as fast as possible. It’s also thought that Bayern Munich are keen on him and may be willing to spend as much as £30m to make a deal happen.

That’s approximately £12m less than Arsenal spent on him, but it’s still a good fee for a player who has had form issues for the last year or so. If Arsene Wenger can squeeze a couple more million out of the Bundesliga champions, I can’t help but wonder if he’d consider selling.

Ozil, on the other hand, must be keen to return back to German football. This could actually prove to be a good deal for every party involved. Arsene Wenger just needs to decide whether to stick or twist.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Mesut Ozil?
