Should Manchester United entertain this Juan Mata swap-deal?

MataIt’s been bizarre watching Juan Mata struggle to fit in at Old Trafford. How can a player with so much talent fail to make an impact?

When he arrived last January he was hailed as Manchester United’s saviour. The fans thought he would be the one to steady United’s ship, but he’s only exacerbated an already bad situation. With his £37.1m price-tag, he more or less had to make a mark. Unfortunately, he’s failed on that score.

A couple of seasons back, he was Chelsea’s best player. He was such a lively, energetic player. Now he looks a little lethargic. His every action seems to be laboured. His passing game has been effected and he’s not the deadly force in front of goal that he used to be.

It looks like Jose Mourinho has ruined him for the rest of us. His comments, prior to his Chelsea exit, have sapped the confidence out of the Juan Mata. Such a shame.

But Manchester United can’t afford to keep hold of a player who just isn’t producing the goods. It looks like they may need to move him on.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are willing to offer Juan Mata to Roma, in return for their talented midfielder, Kevin Strootman.

If you’re a Manchester United fan, you’ve probably heard Strootman’s name before. He’s a long-term target who has looked destined for a move to Old Trafford for quite some time. Now that The Red Devils have something to offer Roma in return (beyond cold hard cash, of course), perhaps the club is finally in a position to close this deal?

Strootman and Mata aren’t comparable players by any means. Strootman is more of an all-rounder, whilst Juan Mata is an attacking midfielder who often shirks his defensive responsibilities. The Dutchman is defensively astute and he’s capable of producing the goods further up the pitch.

He’s been nicknamed ‘The Dutch Roy Keane’ for a reason. I can’t help but feel that Manchester United need a player in this mould.

I’ll be sorry to see Juan Mata go, but it’s probably best for him and the club that he does.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Juan Mata? Should Manchester United sign Kevin Strootman?

  • Graham says:

I think it would be hasty to let Mata go. We need a good squad of players if we are to compete in Europe and allows for versatility on the pitch against different opposition and then there are also injuries to consider. Strootman would be a great signing (if his knee is proven to be in good shape) as we need a top class box to box midfielder like Keano and Robson…
Let’s see how the squad and team shapes up over the next two seasons.
