Not so long ago Liverpool were seriously interested in a talented Ukrainian winger called Yevhen Konoplyanka. In fact, he was close to a January deadline day move to Anfield, but the move fell apart when his club, Dnipro FC vetoed the deal. It’s all a little unfortunate really.
Many fans thought that Brendan Rodgers would re-ignite his interest in the summer transfer window, but this never came to pass. Rodgers seemed to have different targets in mind. In the end, he brought in Lazar Markovic and that seemed to be that.
Still, if Liverpool are weak in any area of the pitch, it’s down the flanks. It’s the one area that doesn’t seem to be brimming with talent.
Makes you wonder: could a player like Yevhen Konoplyanka still do a job at Liverpool? Could Brendan Rodgers re-ignite his interest?
Unfortunately, things don’t look too good for The Reds. According to The Metro, Inter Milan are set to beat The Reds to the punch. The source claims that the Italian side is already preparing a formal bid for the player and that Dnipro would be willing to accept a deal for a fraction of their previous £18m asking price.
This must make Liverpool fans feel a little uncomfortable. If Konoplyanka is available as part of a cut price deal, shouldn’t their club be in the running to sign him?
Yevhen is a very exciting attacking minded midfielder. He’s also pretty versatile, as he’s capable of playing down the centre or on either flank. This flexibility should see him work his way into the Liverpool first team without too much difficulty. Once he’s made it in, his pace, dribbling ability, creativity and vision should help him to stick.
Last season he scored 13 goals in 36 appearances. This year he’s found the back of the net once in one game. He’s a fairly effective performer.
It’s easy to see why Brendan Rodgers got excited about him in the first place. Let’s hope he’s still holding a candle for the Ukrainian. He could be the perfect January addition to Liverpool’s squad, if they can see off the advances of Inter Milan (and co.).
