Diego LuganoArsenal’s decision to not bring any further defensive personnel over the summer has already come back to bite them in the butt. In truth, it’s a bizarre situation. For a start, this eventuality was completely predictable. It was clear that The Gunners didn’t have enough options in this department. The fans knew it. Pundits knew it. Why didn’t Arsene Wenger know it? Why did the Arsenal hierarchy do nothing about it?

As things currently stand, The Gunners’ season rests of a knife edge. They’ve been poor since the very start and they were atrocious against Borussia Dortmund during their mid-week Champions League clash. If they don’t start improving soon, they could be out of the running for any meaningful silverware before they know it.

Perhaps the solution lies in snapping up a free agent. But is there anybody out there who’s good enough to add some serious depth to Arsenal’s defense?

As it happens, The Metro has lined up a rather interesting option. The source claims that Arsene Wenger is considering making a move for the captain of the Uruguayan team, Diego Lugano. Could he be the solution?

He’s certainly got plenty of experience behind him. The 33-year-old has 95 caps for Uruguay and has played for clubs like Paris Saint Germain, Malaga and Fenerbache. He’s tall, powerful and strong in the tackle. In that sense, he should fit right into a Premier League side.

At this stage, however, it’s worth noting that he’s struggled to make his mark at West Brom. He also made a limited impact at Paris Saint Germain, so he’s not exactly the ideal choice, particularly given his lack of pace.

But it’s not like Arsenal are spoiled for choice. Let’s also not forget that he’d be a freebie signing. It’d very much be a deal of convenience, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t pay dividends for the North London side. We know that he’s a top defender from his work on the international scene. Now he just needs to be backed at club level.

It’ll be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger is willing to give him another shot in the Premier League.

What’s your take? Is Diego Lugano the solution to Arsenal’s defensive woes?
