Khedira1Throughout the summer, Arsenal fans wouldn’t stop droning on about how badly their club needed to sign a new defensive midfielder. Everybody seemed to be tired with the limited impact that both Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini were exercising in the centre-of-the-park.

Unfortunately, Arsene Wenger opted against moving in for a new option in this position. I’m sure that now we’re smack bang in the middle of the action, fans won’t be much happier. The Gunners are curiously low on defensive personnel in just about every area of the pitch.

But the lack of defensive cover in the midfield means that their lack of quality centre-back or full-back options has been made all too clear. If Arsenal had somebody with pace or power guarding the back-four, perhaps they wouldn’t concede so many goals.

Mikel Arteta offers a consistent level of passing, but very little else. I’m not sure what Mathieu Flamini offers. With this in mind, I’d argue that signing a defensive midfielder is now a must for The Gunners.

Luckily, it looks like Arsenal are on the hunt. More precisely, Arsene Wenger is thought to be after the same player he was chasing during the summer transfer window. The man I’m referring to is Real Madrid’s dynamic German, Sami Khedira. The Mirror claim that Arsenal have already agreed an £11m deal ‘in principle’.

This should come as very exciting news to Arsenal fans. Khedira is a quality option with lots of experience. He’s got 51 caps for a very talented German international side and has made 146 appearances in total for Real Madrid. You don’t pull off that feat without having something special about your game.

Khedira’s strong in the air, tough in the tackle and he positions himself well. He’s also pretty handy on the ball and loves to get involved in attacks wherever possible. I’m sure that this will endear him nicely to Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners need to sign somebody in this position and I’d argue that Khedira is the best possible choice. Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger feels the same way.

What’s your take? Is Sami Khedira the right man for The Gunners?
