Do Arsenal really need to sign this PSG prodigy?

Adrien RabiotArsenal’s pursuit of technically talented young attacking midfielders is becoming a little silly now. When will Arsene Wenger realise that enough is enough?

Throughout each iteration of the transfer window, The Gunners pick up a wealth of links to these types of player. Arsene Wenger just can’t seem to help himself.

Last summer he broke the club’s transfer record by spending £42.4m on Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil. He already had Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Tomas Rosicky and more in this area of the pitch, so it was surprising that he chose to spend big on another midfielder. Still, The Professor does love to confound his fan-base.

All this build-up leads me to Arsenal’s continued interest in Paris Saint Germain prodigy, Adrien Rabiot. He’s young, he’s French and he’s a midfielder with great vision and the ability to deliver a killer pass. Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before.

The Metro claims that Arsenal are still interested in the 19-year-old, but that Serie A side Roma are currently leading the chase. It’s even suggested that the Rome-based side have agreed terms with the player. If The Gunners are to win this battle, they’re going to have to work hard.

Luckily Rabiot’s contractual situation plays into their hands. He’s only got a year left on his Paris Saint Germain contract and it doesn’t look like he’s about to agree new terms any time soon. As such, he could be available as a free transfer next summer. Alternatively, The Gunners could sneak in with a crafty January bid, in an attempt to steal a march on Roma.

Roma might be able to offer the Frenchman more regular game-time, but The Gunners can offer him Arsene Wenger; the finest moulder of young talent in all the land. There may not be too much room for a player like Rabiot in Arsenal’s midfield, but I wouldn’t bet against Wenger making it work.

If he’s good enough, he’ll get game-time. There’s no reason why he can’t get ahead of players like Tomas Rosicky, or even Jack Wilshere in the pecking order. If he works hard, adapts quickly and plays the long-game, he could even prove to be an excellent signing.

It’ll just be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger is interested in doing business in January, or whether he’s hoping to wait until summer. The success of this deal could hinge on that decision.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners really be looking to pursue Adrien Rabiot?

No, no…no!! We just do not need this guy. The comparison between him and William Carvalho, show William to be a mile more suited to Arsenal’s needs than Rabiot. We keep going for weak players instead of the athletic powerhouses we used to have. Up to the invincibles, big dominating players like William made us into the force we were. Now we seem to want to buy either midgets or skinny sticks.
