C Ronaldo Man UnitedCristiano Ronaldo, one of the best footballers in the world, spent six years at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, making 196 appearances and scoring 84 goals. Is it any wonder that he’s considered a Manchester United legend?

Still, it’s also worth noting that his career only really took off when he left Old Trafford and moved to Real Madrid.

Since he moved to The Bernabeu, he has scored 256 goals in 252 games – a truly unbelievable return. Already this season he has scored four times in 6 games, so there’s no sign that he’s starting to slow down.

Despite currently being at the peak of his game, rumours that he could one day return back to Manchester United don’t seem to stop. Even Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit hasn’t stopped the papers linking the Portuguese great with a return back to his former hunting grounds.

The Metro recently published an article claiming that Cristiano Ronaldo is’determined’ to leave Real Madrid because of his dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer policy. Naturally enough, this news is sure to provoke the interest of the Manchester United hierarchy. Could this trigger a chain of events that will lead to Ronaldo’s return?

‘Determined’ is a strong word. It suggests that Ronaldo’s not going to rest until he gets his way. The aforementioned source suggests that the Portuguese wing-wizard is frustrated that his club chose to sell both Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mention his feelings on Real’s new recruits: top drawer footballers like Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez. Surely Ronny understands that there’s give and take in football?

Regardless, it makes sense for Manchester United to test the waters with a speculative bid. This is especially true given The Metro’s claim that Manchester City are also keen to pluck up the United legend. That’s almost unthinkable. Louis Van Gaal and co. just can’t afford to let that happen.

With Cristiano Ronaldo thought to be available for £60m (a relative bargain, even if that’s a huge amount of cash), The Red Devils should have the financial firepower necessary to close the deal. Let’s just hope that Van Gaal is up for the chase.

What’s your take? Could Cristiano Ronaldo ever move to Manchester City?

“his career only really took off when he left Old Trafford and moved to Real Madrid”. So I guess being recognized as the greatest footballer in the world while he was at Man United, he was still relatively unknown? Even more amazing we managed to sell for a world transfer record. A silly comment to make really. On the serious point, Ronaldo has famously exploited press as a means to an end. He did it at United and even more so at Madrid, usually resulting in a larger contract for him. I would love to have Ronaldo back ordinarily wearing the red shirt but I cant stop thinking his more recent injuries and his age mean we might perhaps be better off looking elsewhere to younger talent.

Perhaps in an alternate universe. That said, your comment that “his career only really took off after he left United” is silly at best.
