Can Manchester United still seal this £40m deal?

Juan CuadradoHaving completed a couple of big deals earlier in the summer, The Red Devils now seem to be resting on their laurels. New additions Luke Shaw (Southampton’s former star left-back) and Ander Herrera (a technically gifted midfielder from Athletic Bilbao) look like they’ll make an impact next year, but are they enough to guide Manchester United to Premier League glory?

I’m not so sure. The Red Devils have been beating all and sundry in the pre-season tour of the United States, but that won’t necessarily translate into success when competitive football starts back up again. Friendly football is a completely different ball game.

Whilst it can help to create belief among fans, its the players who carry the team throughout the season. If Manchester United don’t have the right personnel, they won’t be genuine title contenders next year.

All of this is to say that I can’t help but feel that Manchester United could benefit from making another signing or two – especially if it’s a big name player.

This brings me to The Red Devil’s interest in Colombian World Cup star, Juan Cuadrado. The fleet-footed forward made 4 assists and scored 1 goal as his side left an indelible mark on the competition this summer. Could he now be about to leave his mark on the Premier League?

Manchester United fans will certainly hope so. According to The Mirror, however, a deal for Juan Cuadrado is beginning to look unlikely. They claim that United’s interest in the player could soon be trumped by Barcelona, who always seem to be on the look out for attacking talent.

The source even carries quotes from man-of-the-moment, James Rodriguez, who’s currently playing for Real Madrid: “I hope that the deal goes through, he is a great friend of mine. If he were to arrive, it would open the door to other Colombians, because we would have many playing at great clubs.”

Interesting stuff. Still, it’s worth noting that Manchester United have enough financial firepower to force this deal through.

Goal.com recently published an article claiming that Cuadrado’s club, Fiorentina, value the player at £40m. If The Red Devils really are interested, they could still beat Barcelona to the punch. They just have to be pro-active.

Just imagine the impact a player like Juan Cuadrado could have for United next season!

What’s your take? Should Manchester United let Barcelona walk away with Juan Cuadrado?
